About Dr Craig
Dr Craig Geoff Howes began his journey in palliative care in 2018 as the inpatient unit doctor at Hospice Wits. In 2020, he established a private palliative care practice and now consults across Cape Town, the West Coast, and Johannesburg. He also serves as a part-time
lecturer at the University of Cape Town (UCT).
Geoff earned his medical degree from UCT, followed by a Diploma in Emergency Medicine from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa. His commitment to palliative care led him to obtain a Postgraduate Certificate and a Postgraduate Diploma in Palliative Medicine from UCT. In 2024, he graduated with distinction from the University of Glasgow with a Master of Science in Palliative Care. His MSc research focused on addressing the palliative care needs of vulnerable communities, particularly queer-identifying populations, through healthcare worker education.
Aside from his clinical and educational work, Geoff is a recognised speaker on palliative care accessibility and is actively involved in palliatively focussed research. Most recently, he co-authored A Handbook for Building a Remote Access Palliative Care Practice in South Africa: Enhancing Access to Palliative Care Using Virtual Solutions with Dr Barbara Matthews.
Geoff is currently serving on the board of The Association of Palliative Care Practitioners of South Africa and is a member of the executive committee of The Southern African Sexual Health Association.
